What is The Gingerbread Castle?

In the small town of Hamburg New Jersey one of America’s earliest theme parks was created in 1930. The Gingerbread Castle is an architectural gem designed by the artist Joseph Urban as a marketing strategy for Frederick H. Bennett. Bennett was a businessman who created famous products, such as the Milk Bone dog biscuit and whole-wheat products at his historic Wheatsworth Mill.

This project has created a digital library focused on the historical significance of the Gingerbread Castle and it’s impact on the community, the children who experienced its special magic, as well as its cultural and commercial significance.

Through the presentation of images, essays, video and interactive commentary, the library will allow people to share their memories of the Castle’s history.  Hopefully, the legacy of the imagery of the castle will continue to power new creative endeavors.   If you have personal stories, souvenirs, photos or movies to share, please contact the project librarian.
