In 1968, the Gingerbread Librarian, builder of this digital library, was four years old. Her mother, a life long resident of Hamburg, mailed her this letter, at a cost of ten cents, to memorialize the 50th anniversary of Air Mail postage. The post mark carries the postal cancellation depicting the Gingerbread Castle.
Three things are interesting about this special treasure:
- It is the only original souvenir in the Gingerbread Librarian’s personal collection – all other souvenirs were collected after 2007.
- This artifact is the only example of the Gingerbread Castle Postmark that could be found during the creation of this library.
- Most interesting, is that in researching the Gingerbread Castle and Hamburg at the NJ Historical Society – the Librarian learned that her great, great, great grandfather, Thomas Lawrence, started this post office and served as its Postmaster in 1795.
